This thing isn't working

My final stop of the week. I attempted to see if I could "borrow" a wi-fi connection through my DS so i would be saving myself quite a bit of money. Either buy a smart phone once my cellphone plan is up, or buy the Nintendo DS web browser for 30 dollars, its a no-brainer. Unfortunately no connection existed, and I'll be doling out some serious cash come January.Boo!
On the bright side it will be so much easier for me to look up prices of things, and it will keep me from buying overpriced crap.

Anyways...

Four nice pint glasses:

And a PS2 controller:

I'm done until Monday. Going to the Red Sox game on Sunday, so nothing that day.

They're all fakes!

The heat is unbearable. So I'll stick to Quincy for the rest of the week. Picked up a good pair of running/work shorts ( no pic).
Got this Simpsons mug:

Got a copy of probably the worst Sega Saturn game; Bug!:

and last but certainly not least I got these awesome chess pieces, the board I got on an earlier outing a while ago:

whatchu lookin for?

So today I decided I was gonna head out to this so-called best thrift store in Mass. Boomerangs in JP. Well its not the biggest, its a little pricey, but it definitely is one of the best. Some of the best wares I've ever seen. Everything is so organized, and the place has lots of character too. Its a five star store no doubt. I'll have to hit it up at least once a month. Didn't get anything spectacular there, got a couple of cd racks ( no picture). Got a beat up and ugly steamer trunk, it'll do its job of freeing up some space in my room:

I also got a few glasses, I especially like the old-school Harp Pint:

I did look at a few German steins in their boutique area but they were too rich for my blood, and too ordinary to warrant more than 10 dollars.

I actually went to Harrison ave before I went to boomerangs. Ahh the goodwill, where the service usually sucks, the place a total disorganized mess, the prices inconsistent, and the merchandise not even guaranteed to work. OK ok enough ranting.
Got another Dreamcast VMU:

Got Pink Floyd's The Wall 2-disc CD, missing the 2nd disc. BOO!

and a couple of Budweiser ( yuck) glasses:

Tomorrow I'm on a search for a comfortable pair of shorts for work. And a decision to go back to Harrison ave and get that 200 dollar Williams & Sonoma bread maker I foolishly didn't get. Would've gave it to my mom.

I knocked myself out walking into a pole

Got this awesome First Edition Coca-Cola Holiday Stein today in Quincy:

Then went to Central later on and got this Gerz Vaduz-Liechtenstein stein unfortunately without the lid on top. Still a nice piece though:

Also got these three Dreamcast games; Sonic Adventure, Rippin' Riders, and Armada:

May I add that I didn't pay listed price for any of this stuff. The new computer systems are such a pain, most employees half-ass it.
Hopefully I'll get out to JP tomorrow.

The wires are all tangled up

After a bit of a break I'm back. Quincy proved to be a decent haul today. My infatuation with Gregorian Chant continues with another record:

I also got some things in the video game category. A Dreamcast controller with Sega VMU:

and a copy of Mega Man X4 for Playstation:

I then headed out to Brockton. Traffic sucked both ways, but it was worth it. I cannot believe I got this Boston Celtics 1985-86 Champions sweatshirt..that actually fits me. Fucking Awesome!
Front:

Back:

I also got some glasses. I particularly like the Dinkel Acker pilsner glass and the heavy Heineken one:

Thursday, June 21, 2007

Glow-in-the-dark Brontosaurus

I got the gift of coming into work an hour later today. Didn't get anything spectacular, but I did pick up this rad hardcover on Manfred von Richthofen aka the Red Baron:

Ok for real now, see you Sunday.

I was gonna beat her

Went to Quincy today, didn't expect to find anything there but since it is so close I couldn't resist. They installed the new computer systems there today, so I can expect to wait in line for a week from now on.
Was going to finally go to the place in JP today but apparently I have to be in work early. So instead I went to Harrison and got a couple of records (obviously):

Also got a few glasses:

Well, the month from hell continues. There will be no more adventures until Sunday.

...and this woman hands me a copy of DUNE. Listen lady I know I'm a nerd but not that much of a nerd. Went to three places today. Hit up Davis Sq. first, this place always has the most selection. Saw a N64 and a Genesis but picked up neither because they both looked like they went through WWIII. Most books EVER today, but sometimes too much of something is a bad thing. They had 5 laundry carts overflowing with books but it was impossible to browse because there was no place to put the discarded ones. Some lady was painstakingly entering in ISBN numbers into her smartphone trying to look for rare and valuable books. Good idea but you need to know when there is a good find otherwise you'll be there all day. I still have 7 months left on this current plan so I'll have to wait on portable internet. I do have an idea to use my Nintendo DS to go online but I'll have to see if i can steal a wi-fi connection in the stores.
Didn't pick up much got these awesome records:

Went to Central after. Someone donated 3 1980s Apple Macintosh computers. I hate Apple now, but back in the day those computers were amazing and if one of them actually worked you bet your ass one would be in our living room. A man was searching for toys for his child when he came across this talking Bratz doll. It said " I can't believe I have to get up at 8 O'clock". I picked up a hardcover copy of Cold Mountain for one of the waitresses at work and that ended that saga.
Last but certainly not least Quincy comes through!
Picked up a Virtual Boy! Ahh the long forgotten Nintendo failure. Of course the stand is missing and the goggle apparatus which is going to make this thing impossible to play but whatever, i couldn't resist. It came with Virtual Boy Wario Land:

Next on this list is a RCA fully automatic turntable:

Lastly I should note i picked up a glass from each place today:

But before I go here is a conversation I had with some little black girl:
First she asks me if I work there. Then...
Girl: What are you going to do with that? ( referring to this giant stuffed spider)
Me: I might buy it just because my roommate hates spiders.
Girl: Wait, you live with someone who isn't your family?
Me: Yes, I live with a bunch of people.
Girl: Is it because you are poor?

awesome.

Why would anyone buy that table when there are plenty of other tables to buy

If you haven't caught on by now, the titles of these posts come from random actual/overheard conversations with the many denizens of thrift nation.
After my longest hiatus in over a year (4 days), I'm back making the rounds. Today I went to Quincy and mercifully got a few records, otherwise its been a pretty bad drought there the last 2 weeks.

You know what I find funny?...and it happens at every place; people think I work at whatever store I go in. Can you help me? Why is this so much? This area needs to be straightened up. I just find all this hilarious.
I went to a yard sale today on the way back. The only things of interest were a couple of NES games and some SNES, but they were super scope games and I dont have the scope (yet) so there was no reason to buy them. That and the fact that everything at this yard sale was covered in some type of motor oil for some ungodly reason. Thanks but no thanks.
After that me and my roommates went to the Raynham Flea Market. I haven't been there in over a year. The funny thing is I have no interest in buying anything there anymore. Why would I pay a markup on say records $3-$7 a piece when I can get them through goodwill for .99. Nintendo games for 5 bucks, are you kidding me? Glassware, steins..the same stuff I have; 3 dollars and 15 respectively. I'll just find my stuff by chance and cheaper, it's more fun that way thank you very much.
Monday, plans to go to Davis Square and Central. Haven't been to either of these places in prob a month.

"We've been here for 30 years"

Started the day off in Quincy, still nothing. Headed off to the place in Hingham only to not be able to find it. (more on that later). Went out to Harrison Ave and took in a great haul.
Bunch of awesome records:

Got a few nice glasses ( especially the .5 liter Kaltenberg and the Lowenbrau; 3rd and 4th respectively):

An Old Mr. Boston Commemorative Bottle from 1970:

On to videogames. Let me note that over the past week I could have gotten 4 Playstation One's but they were way overpriced and the system just bores me to collect. Saw a Genesis today for 6.99 but it was obviously broken. Saw 2 NES's but they were waaay overpriced at 20 bucks a piece for console-only. Also saw a SNES Advantage control stick that I may pick up next time if it's still there next week. So what DID I get?

Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt (for the millionth time) & Kung Fu Heroes for the NES:

and.... A SEGA SATURN!!! WOOHOO!

My unique/awesome item of the Day definitely is this Warsteiner Stein:

Take a look at it, nothing out of the ordinary, right? WRONG. Although it is a regular sized stein, it certainly doesn't weigh like one. This baby clocks in at over 30 lbs.!!!

After that outing I decided to look for that place in Hingham again. Apparently I went to the wrong North St. the first time. Didn't really matter this time around. I found the place and it totally wasn't what I was expecting. It was a tiny hole-in-the-wall that carried jewelry, art from local artists and overpriced used books I wouldn't ever care to read. The place next to it was a leather shop with a few vintage bikes and alot of grateful dead memorabilia. Owner seemed like a cool guy. It was awkward being in there while he was fixing this guys vacuum cleaner.

Prob won't go anywhere else this week because I'm tied up at work. Unless anything turns up at Quincy, you probably won't hear from me until Sunday.

" I don't have to buy you a damn thing"

My plans today were awash, and not because of the rain that didn't happen. Had to work today, oh well. Made the most of it anyways. Went to Quincy, NOTHING. Nothing good is coming out of there lately, it seems to happen every so often. Was going to go to the salvation army but those places close at 5. I decided to head out to the Brockton AMVETS, for a rare back to back week. Picked up a Crispus Attucks bicentennial Boston Massacre Jim Beam Bottle:

Also got a couple of Beethoven records. His Symphony No. 3 and his Sonatas; No. 17 & 18:

Tomorrow I'm going to go to the place in Hingham for the first time , then off to Harrison ave, for I have another busy work week which will kill any chances of me going around until Sunday.

Slim Pickings

The finds just aren't coming my way lately. I picked up an old-school stainless steel Stanley Thermos but decided to put it down. I mean what use do I really have for it, I don't work outside in the cold.
Anyways.. picked up Led Zeppelin's III on vinyl:

I have some things up my sleeve for tomorrow and Tuesday.
Monday: Weather permitting, go to The Davis Square goodwill. If its too rainy I'm going to unchartered territory for me. Rt 1 Salvation Army, or Boomerangs in JP. Haven't decided yet, just knew I had to add some arsenals to my repertoire.
Tuesday: I've heard some good things about this place in Hingham; Unique Boutique. We'll see where that goes.
My wild card would be to go to Harrison ave and raid their vinyl, now that it makes sense to do so.

A Few Days Off...

Wednesday and Thursday did nothing for me, I guess I've hit a bit of a dry spell at Quincy. Maybe It's because of the renovation in the back thats under way, then again I've only been able to spend about 20 minutess right when they open because of the extra time I'm putting in at work.
Friday and Saturday are off days ( work, Boo!). To make up for the last two days I'm expecting to come across the holy grail or a draft of the Declaration of Independence.
See you Sunday!

Broken Ankles

A quick run before I headed into work today. This rad Zippo Lighter set. Huzzah! Now i can smoke blunts the size of zeppelins in style:

The reality of having a portable working record player still hasn't set in yet. Now I can buy all the weird records I want! Helloooo Russian Gypsy Music!!:

Ask and you shall receive. Here it is Amy. The Batman clock, in all its time telling glory:

Let's Get Started

I don't work on Mondays. Everyone else in the free world does. So what do I do while everyone is at work? What do you think.
The Quincy Goodwill yielded nothing today. May I add, this place is down the street from my apartment so I hit it up 5 days a week, usually before work. This store is in the process of renovating. Hopefully it will be more organized, it's an absolute disaster and almost none of the electronics work. I usually do a clean up job here ever since the Vietnamese guy who practically lived there got banned for stealing a few months back.
So onward to Harrison Ave in Roxbury. This is as far into Roxbury as anyone should ever have to go. Had a nice conversation with a woman who took matters into her own hands by stealing after being overpriced on so many items only to find them cheaper at Urban Renewal. She does have a point. I have yet to figure out Goodwill's pricing structure. There were two Playstation One's side-by-side today. One was 19.99 ( a rip off) and the one next to it was 6.99 ( thats more like it). Why the price difference? Does the 6.99 one not work? Not that you could even test it if you wanted to. It was console only. So its buy at your own risk because there is no return policy on electronics. Anways...
Picked up a Playstation One controller:

An unopened copy of Boston's Greatest Sports Stories: Beyond the Headlines DVD ( for a buck!):

...and a few nice glasses. More notably the first one, A .5 liter Lowenbrau stein which has a U.S. Embassy stamp from Bonn on the side of it. And the second one, a Samuel Smith Pint Imported from England with the Government Stamp etched in the back:

The stein will go great with the set of four 1-Liter Lowenbrau's I got last week:

Later on I headed into Brockton to go to the AMVETS, which like Harrison I go once a month. I haven't been here in probably two months though because the quality of finds is low. But today was a pretty good one.

Got a Mario/Duckhunt NES game. I need another one of these like I need another hole In my head:

A couple of more glasses, especially the late 1960's Red Sox glass on the right:

And the find of the day....a record player that actually WORKS! After so many failed attempts, I got this General Electric Solid-State Automatic. Plays 33s, 45s, 78s, and even 16s. I was totally rocking my World War I narration and anthems tonight:
